Myanmar (Burma)

Burma, or Myanmar, as it’s also known, is an emerging tourist hotspot, which attracts thousands of holiday makers every year. This is a country which boasts many varied terrains, from lush jungle, to picturesque mountain chains and fertile plains. White sandy beaches lie on the coastline and are quite simply paradise on Earth. The biggest cities, Yangon, Mandalay and Bagan are filled with all manner of architectural and archaeological wonders.

You’ll be impressed with the natural beauty of the place, as well as the charming-pagoda filled cities.

There are many ways to travel around Burma. You can choose to take an escorted tour on foot, by bike, using transport with a guide, or the most popular choice seems to be to take a river cruise along the Irrawaddy River. So what can you expect to enjoy on your trip? Here are the highlights.

Yangon or Rangoon as it’s named in the UK, is known for its fantastic array of colonial buildings. A walk along the down town, tree-lined avenues will give you an idea of why so many of these beautiful buildings are listed. A trip to the Kandawgyi Lake and Nature Park are also well worth a visit. If you’re travelling with a partner, why not steal a kiss at Burma’s own centre for romance, the Inya Lake Park.

Mandalay is a city full of must-see monasteries and pagodas, such as the Kuthodaw and Kyauktawgyi pagodas. The Mandalay Palace has spectacular grounds, also making it a fascinating attraction and no visit to the city is complete without first experiencing the incredible panoramic views from Mandalay Hill.

Other popular tourist excursions include trips to see the Pindaya Caves, a thorough examination of the Archaeological Zone at Bagan and a trip to Mount Popa. As for cuisine, you can enjoy traditional seafood dishes, such as noodles with ngapi (fish paste) and a huge variety of fresh, delicious salads. Should you be interested in spotting the local wildlife in the national parks, you’ll no doubt be pleased to discover that there’s a chance you can experience such exotic creatures as tigers, rhinos and elephants, although smaller mammals such as monkeys and tapirs are more commonly seen.
