Fraser Island is one of the most unique islands on the planet – the largest sand island in the world and probably the most popular island with visitors of the east coast of Australia. It is also home to a number of freshwater lakes most notably Lake Mckenzie – a huge freshwater lake which is the perfect swimming spot thanks to its calm, clear waters and golden sand. Lake Mckenzie, while perhaps the most special lake on Fraser, is not the only one. The island has over 100 freshwater lakes for you to explore.
Located around 300 Kilometres north of Brisbane and 15 kilometres off the coast of Hervey Bay which takes roughly 50 minutes on a ferry. If you have your own transport (4WD) then the best way to access the island is through the ferry from Inskip Point which will take around 2 hours. The nearest airport to the island is Hervey Bay Airport in which flights travel daily from most major airports in Australia such as Sydney and Melbourne – just contact one of our team and we will be sure to find the perfect route for you.
All the roads on Fraser Island are obviously made up of sand making it only accessible for four-wheel drive jeeps, this adds to the sense of adventure as you rally through the rainforest and along the wide, long beaches. The most popular of these is known as 75 Mile Beach – pretty self-explanatory, a huge beach on the eastern side of the island which is perfect for practising your 4WD driving skills and providing a unique experience as you cruise along the beach. Another very popular drive among the visitors to this island is the Central Lakes scenic drive in which you can expect to see Pile Valley and also tick off a number of the lakes and creeks for you to swim in.
You can hire your own 4WD if you desire with guidance and training provided if needed. There are also a number of tours available just contact one of our team at Low Cost Deals and they will be able to pass on their knowledge of the best places to hire your own car or join one of the many tours available for you to book.
If you would rather explore the island by foot then the Fraser Island Great Walk is a track as long as 90km which will take around 6 days and winds between Happy Valley and Dilli Village – a great way to see the most popular sites on the island such as Wanggoolba Creek, Lake Wabby, Lake Mckenzie and look at awe at the huge towering trees you can find in the Valley of the Giants.
To complete this mammoth walk you would need to arrange camping facilities to add to the adventure you have taken upon yourself – make sure you purchase a camping permit for as little as 5 Australian dollars a night. If you would rather partake in a smaller less rigorous hike there are plenty of shorter walks you can do for a half a day or as an overnight adventure. Fraser Island is very hiker friendly with great maps available as well as a number of signposts explaining the landmarks on the island and offering directions to the landmarks. =
Accommodation on the island is very varied – the most popular option among the tourists is to camp to really experience the raw nature on the island and sleep under the stars. However, for a more luxurious experience of the island, you can stay at one of the resorts located on the island – such as the Kingfisher Resort. The Kingfisher resort has beautiful apartments with beach views set amongst the rainforest with three main restaurants all providing fresh food shipped into the resort from the mainland. Another option if you don’t fancy camping is called the Eurong Beach Resort which offers apartments with their own kitchens and outdoor BBQs so you can cook up a storm after a day of adventuring this mysterious island. Our team at Low-Cost Deals have all gained the Aussie Expert status and can provide some in-depth knowledge on all resorts and options on places to stay on the island, just contact us with any questions you may have.
The island, most of which is protected as part of the Great Sandy National Park, is home to a profusion of birdlife and wildlife, including the famous dingo, while offshore waters teem with dugong, dolphins, manta rays, sharks and migrating humpback whales. Each year thousands of whales migrate to the warm tropical seas along Australia to give birth and Hervey Bay and Fraser Island is the best place to spot them. The best time of the year for whale watching in the area is from August to October where you can almost guarantee to see humpback whales breach off the coast. For a better look and a more up and close experience, there are a number of whale watching tours available in the local areas for around £60 for an unforgettable tour.
