There are many paths and picnic areas, and several viewpoints within easy reach including Lady Bantry’s Lookout, which gives a panoramic view across the Bay and up to the Caha Mountains.

    St John’s is the picturesque capital city of Newfoundland and Labrador, and North America’s most easterly point. Brightly painted houses cling to the hillsides and the coastline is dotted with lighthouses and fortifications, some of which you can choose to explore. You could join a hike to see more of the rugged coastal scenery, which in autumn is popular with berry pickers, or view the coastline from a different perspective on a boat trip.

    Admire the rugged coastline that surrounds Halifax, the world’s second-largest natural harbour. This beautifully-preserved city was founded in 1749 and you can explore Nova Scotia’s historic capital and see the views from 18th-century Fort George at the Citadel National Historic Site. Take in Pier 21, Canada’s historic entrance point for immigrants, and perhaps visit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, which contains personal effects salvaged from the Titanic. Maybe enjoy a stroll along the boardwalk.

    Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the province of Prince Edward Island. It is situated on a harbour formed by the confluence of three rivers. Downtown contains many Victorian-era houses and buildings while the waterfront has been redeveloped with walking trails and parks. Striking Province House is where the Prince Edward Island Legislature has met since 1847, making it Canada’s second-oldest seat of government.

    Explorer Jacques Cartier landed in Gaspé in 1534 and claimed the land, dubbing it New France in honour of the French king, a spot now marked by a 42-ton granite cross! While here perhaps visit Forillon National Park, where sea birds nest and seals and whales can sometimes be seen offshore, or join a boat trip around the Parc National de l’Île-Bonaventure et du Rocher-Percé to see the vast Percé Rock.

    Sail to French-speaking Montreal which lies at the confluence of the Ottawa and St Lawrence rivers. This elegant city has a distinctly European feel – see the lavish neo-Gothic Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours and the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice, Montreal’s oldest building which dates back to 1683. Alternatively join a panoramic coach trip into the Laurentians, where a cable car will take you to the summit to admire the glorious autumn colours below.

    Quebec City has a commanding position on Cap Diamant overlooking the St Lawrence River. Exploring by horse and carriage is a great way to see the highlights of the UNESCO-listed Old Town with its 17th and 18th-century buildings and famous Château Frontenac Hotel. In the only walled city north of Mexico you can find the Place Royale and Petit Champlain Quarter — the oldest commercial district in North America where the Breackneck Steps, built in 1635, are worth seeing, if not climbing.

    Why not stretch your legs with a guided walk or even take a boat ride in picturesque Saguenay Fjord National Park. Alternatively the Musee de la Petite Maison Blanche takes a charming look back at the history of the area — including the devastating floods of 1996. Close to the docks, the Renaissance revival-style Cathedrale Saint-Francois-Xavier is an unexpected delight.

    Baie-Comeau is a small town on the Whale Route — the 775 mile stretch of coastline of the Estuary and Gulf of St Lawrence where 13 different species of whales, including the blue whale, can often be found close to the shore. Perhaps join an excursion. You’re also in logging country so alternatively head to the Village Forestier d’Antan of Franquelin, 20 minutes from the port where you can enjoy a guided tour of North Shore’s forestry history including activities such as tree-cutting, hauling, log driving and life in the forest. Typical buildings as well as items and photos from the era depict the living conditions and lifestyle of lumberjacks from yesteryear.

    Sail up the Cabot Strait and along the Gulf of St Lawrence to Havre-Saint-Pierre. Perhaps visit the Mingan Archipelago National Park where the wild and dramatic landscape is punctuated by huge limestone monoliths, or perhaps hop aboard a zodiac and ride to Île Quarry.

    Corner Brook is the most northern city in Atlantic Canada. The area was surveyed by Captain James Cook in 1767. The Captain James Cook Historic Site stands on Crow Hill overlooking the city.

    26/09/2018 Cap-aux-Meules, Canada

    Arrive 0900. Depart 1600.

    The name, Cap-aux-Meules — which means Grindstone — comes from the presence of grindstone in the hill overlooking the port, known as the gateway to the Madeleine Islands archipelago. A walk in Parc des Buck, at the end of the Chemin de la Mine will reveal spectacular views of the island and its neighbours. You might also choose to walk the two-kilometre coast path leading to a lookout at the top of the cape.

You can explore here or head out across scenic Cape Breton Island, home to breathtaking scenery. Alternatively head for Baddeck to see the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site or travel to the Fortress of Louisbourg for a tour of the site.
